Back up and restore

A backup is a copy of your Orphie records that you control. It is free. It needs no account and no Orphie server.

Find it in Settings › Backup and restore.

  1. Open Settings › Backup and restore.
  2. Tap Back up now.
  3. Choose where to save the file, such as iCloud Drive, Google Drive, or Files.

Orphie saves one file named like orphie-backup-2026-10-02.orphie. It checks the file after it writes it. When the save works, the screen shows Last backup with the date. Orphie does not choose or manage the place you save to.

A backup holds:

  • Your vehicles and their odometer readings.
  • Your Driving for entries.
  • Your shifts, with their corrections.
  • The route points and stops of each shift.
  • Your theme, your language, and your City names in business purpose setting.
  • Your last-used vehicle and Driving for choices.

A backup leaves out your Region settings, Preselected when you start, and your setup progress.

  1. Open Settings › Backup and restore.
  2. Tap Restore from a backup file.
  3. Choose the backup file.

Orphie checks the whole file before it changes anything. If the file fails a check, Orphie shows a message that ends “Nothing on this phone was changed.” The message says if the file:

  • Is not an Orphie backup. The ZIP from Export all data is not one.
  • Was made by a newer version of Orphie. Update Orphie, then try again.
  • Is damaged or incomplete.
  • Was saved while a shift was in progress.
  • Is too large for Orphie to restore on this phone.

If the file passes, Orphie asks “Replace everything on this phone with this backup?” and shows the backup’s date. Tap Replace to swap in everything from the file. That includes your shifts, routes, corrections, vehicles, odometer readings, and Driving for entries. It also applies the theme, language, city-names setting, and last-used choices from the file. Replace cannot be undone.

If Orphie says the restore may not have finished, close and reopen Orphie.

iPhone and Android write and read the same file format.

Setup has no restore step. Finish setup first. Then open Settings › Backup and restore and tap Restore from a backup file. On Android, you can also tap Restore from Google Drive.

While a shift is open, backup and restore do not work. Orphie shows “Available when no shift is in progress.” On Android, the message sits under the buttons and the buttons do nothing. On iPhone, it appears when you tap. Save or end the shift first.

Android can also copy your log to your own Google Drive. This is Android only.

  • Back up to Google Drive automatically is off by default.
  • Turn it on in Settings › Backup and restore, or on the Keep a copy of your log in your Google Drive screen in setup.
  • Google asks for one approval. It gives Orphie access to its own hidden folder in your Drive, and nothing else.
  • About once a day, on Wi-Fi, Orphie saves a copy there. It also saves one right after you turn it on. It waits while a shift is open.
  • The copy does not show in your Drive file list. Orphie has no server and never sees it.
  • The screen shows the status, such as “Backed up today at 6:40 PM” or “Waiting for Wi-Fi”.

Turn the switch off to stop new copies. The copies already in Drive stay.

To restore a copy, tap Restore from Google Drive. Orphie lists the copies in your Google account with the date, the shift count, and the phone model. Choose one. Orphie runs the same checks and asks the same Replace question. A restore never removes the copies made before it.

Android’s own phone backup to Google stops backing up an app when its data passes 25 MB. This is why Orphie keeps its own copy. Read Privacy and your data for how the copy is protected.

When iCloud Backup is on for your iPhone, Apple’s backup includes Orphie’s shifts, vehicles, and settings. Orphie makes no automatic copy on iPhone. iCloud Backup brings Orphie back when you restore the whole phone. It does not bring it back after you delete and reinstall Orphie.

On Android, the phone’s backup to Google also includes Orphie’s shifts, vehicles, and settings when it is on.

For a copy you control, use Back up now.

Export all data, and the year’s PDF and CSV, make files for reading. Orphie cannot restore from them. Restore from a backup file accepts only a .orphie file made by Back up now. Read Taxes and export.

Delete all data removes records from this phone only. It does not touch your backups in your own iCloud Drive or Google Drive. Read Privacy and your data.
